Healing from narcissistic abuse – how therapy can help you regain control

When a client is impacted by trauma, it changes both mind and body. Trauma from narcissistic abuse can cause a range of psychological, emotional, physical, and spiritual effects such as depression, social anxiety, excessive rumination, confusion, low self-esteem, shame, and PTSD, especially Complex PTSD

Each person’s healing journey is unique.  Seeking help as a survivor of narcissistic abuse can be life changing. The therapy I provide is a personalized approach towards your needs and goals. Some examples for therapy goals I provide but not limited to in healing from narcissistic abuse are:

Processing trauma
Narcissistic abuse is a form of psychological and emotional trauma. It can destroy an individual’s core sense of who they are, more particularly if experienced by a parent in childhood. Therapy provides a safe space for validation to process and release the experiences, heal from trauma bonds, cognitive dissonance, and other forms of trauma.
1
Psychoeducation
Knowledge is power. The first step towards the healing and recovering from this unique type of abuse is starting to recognise these relationship dynamics and patterns. Therapy can provide the knowledge and understanding of the cyclic nature and behaviours of personalities such as narcissism and other unhealthy relationships. This can help you become empowered in understanding your own unique experiences as well as your treatment symptoms and individual circumstances.
2
Rebuilding self-esteem
Therapy can help you develop a stronger sense of self-worth through self-validation and overcoming subconscious programming and negative self-beliefs instilled during abuse.
3
Reclaiming self-agency and authenticity
Therapy can help you find your own voice and reclaim your sense of self, self- agency and authenticity while restoring coping skills and control over your life.
4
Empowerment with boundaries
Strengthened intuition and self-protection is the greatest defence against a manipulative person. Therapy can assist in establishing healthy boundaries, as well as strengthening your self-intuition, self-worth, assertiveness, and confidence.
5
Calming the nervous system
Therapy provides tools for nervous system regulation through somatic healing tools and solutions through a polyvagal nervous system lens.
6
Grief counselling
Therapy helps you feel supported as you process grief knowing you are not alone.

I tailor therapy to each person’s unique needs. In the process, I may draw on a variety of modalities, however the therapeutic relationship is key.

I utilise a range of therapeutic and treatment approaches including:

I aim to facilitate a nurturing base in which clients can experience compassion, authenticity, and honesty to help them reclaim their sense of self with self-awareness, personal growth and a deeper sense of meaning, purpose, and contentment.
